2010-01-10 Eating "スッポン(Pelodiscus sinensis)"

We flew back to Osaka, Japan on January 9th to attend to my elder sister Ritsuko's wedding. The night before the wedding, Ritsuko and her husband took us out for a dinner which then became one of the interesting experiences in our short stay in Japan.
The dinner they planned for us was called "Suppon Ryori" - "Suppon" is a turtle and to be specific, it is "Pelodiscus sinensis", and "Ryori" means "cuisine". You haven't seen Suppon? Here's a picture!

It has a very appetizing look, dones't he? .. To be honest, I hesitated a bit to eat raw turtle as it looked very ..."raw". Often the turtle is presented like this for turtle stew ↓

The dinner started with turtles' raw meat, raw liver, raw heart, and raw eggs.

I was surprised to see Zach not seem to hesitate to try everything placed in front of him!

A brave man

Brave man's quote: "Why hesitate? It's MEAT! Meat is made from deliciousness. A turtle is delicious! "

After turtles' sashimi, we enjoyed a turtle soup!

Kapai with turtle's blood mixed with sake! This crimson colored drink is so... Delicious!!! The color turns dark red very quickly, being exposed to the oxygen. Feeling warm from inside out!

Trying to remember when was the last time we, all three Dojima sisters, got together... And it shocked me that it had been almost 9 years since the last time all three of us met together... How much had I missed the dinner with my sisters..! And this time we had Tomohiro (Ritsuko's husband and my new brother-in-law) and Zach sit around the table with us, eating & drinking turtle. Awesome.
